Young people across Japan marked Coming of Age Day on Monday with a mix of optimism and anxiety,
as the population of the country’s younger generation continues to linger near record lows.
According to government data, about 1.09 million people — 560,000 men and 530,000 women — had reached adulthood as of Jan.
1 since a year earlier, the second-lowest on record after crashing to 1.06 million in 2024.
The data includes foreign residents living in the country for over three months.
